What the service includes
Re-Ridging
The existing ridge is carefully removed and replaced with fresh thatching material, securely fixed and shaped by hand. This reinstates protection at the roof’s most vulnerable point while maintaining the integrity of the surrounding thatch.
Flush Ridge Finish
A flush ridge sits smoothly into the body of the roof rather than standing proud. This creates a softer, traditional profile and is commonly preferred on period and heritage properties.
Cut-Cap Technique
The cut-cap method uses neatly cut and dressed material to create a crisp, well-defined ridge line. This approach allows for greater precision and a more structured finish where desired.
Patterned Ridge (Optional)
Decorative ridge patterns can be formed using traditional tools and techniques. Popular designs include block, diamond and herringbone patterns, with custom or regional styles available. Each patterned ridge is hand-crafted and unique to the property.

Re-ridging, Flush & Cut-Cap (patterned)
Re-ridging replaces the worn ridge at the highest point of a thatched roof. Using traditional flush and cut-cap techniques, the new ridge is hand-shaped and can include decorative patterning to restore protection and enhance the roof’s appearance.
Professional ridge replacement for thatched roofs
The ridge is the most exposed part of a thatched roof and is usually the first area to require renewal. Re-ridging restores protection at the highest point of the roof and allows it to remain weather-tight and structurally sound without disturbing the main body of thatch.
At Country Thatching, re-ridging is carried out using traditional flush and cut-cap techniques, with optional decorative patterning, applying time-honoured methods and materials appropriate to the property.
Why re-ridging is important

A well-executed ridge is both functional and a clear indicator of skilled workmanship.
