Then & Now

Thatching in the old days

A recent project of Country ThatchingThatching was the preferred method of roofing in Britain from Saxon times until the seventeenth century. Its appeal was that materials were relatively inexpensive and there was usually a skilled thatcher living nearby. Finished roofs were attractive and durable. The main drawback was the risk of fire (nowadays much diminished). In some areas, this prompted the use of alternative materials.

Thatching today

If you own a thatched property you value the charm and practicality of thatch. But times have changed. There is often no qualified thatcher 'on the doorstep'. So, when you are looking for thatching services, it is important to select a firm with the necessary skills, experience and attitude to work on your precious building.
