Thatched cottageWe undertake professional thatching work on all types of building - houses, cottages, outbuildings, barns, dovecotes, etc. - irrespective of age and condition. Our work encompasses all aspects of roof thatching, from minor repairs to a full re-thatch.

Following an initial survey and discussions with the client (and any other interested parties, such as Local Authority Planning or Conservation Departments), we submit a survey report and an estimate for Country Thatching to carry out the required work.

If our quotation is accepted, we give realistic estimates of start and finish dates. These will be updated as we get nearer commencement of the work. As a matter of principle, we try to keep the client well informed at all times.

Country Thatching only take on projects within a 50 mile radius of Reading. Please contact us to confirm we can work on your property.

Materials

Country Thatching uses materials of the highest quality, hand selected by us during regular visits to our suppliers in southern England and Europe. There are three main categories:

1. Long Straw

This is a wheat or rye-based straw, cut and threshed prior to delivery to us. It is prepared on the ground and laid long with wooden sparring top and bottom, finished with wire mesh.

2. Wheat Reed

Similar material to long straw but prepared differently - cut, combed and stripped by the farmer before delivery. It is laid and dressed into place with top sparring and finished with wire mesh to give a rounded look and clean finish.

3. Water Reed

A harder and longer lasting material, usually grown in marshy estuaries (e.g. in Norfolk). It is also laid and dressed in place, with wire mesh to cap only.

NOTE: When repairing existing roofs, we always try to use materials and methods that blend in with the age and structure of the building.
